CSS has a commercial food recovery facility in a leased building in McClellan, CA. Via an an aerobic digestion process incorporating added enzymes, CSS converts organic residuals (food waste) from local grocery stores into food hydrolysate (a liquid soil amendment) and dried pet food products. The high nutrient value food hydrolysate is a proven beneficial soil amendment and fertilizer, improving crop yield and health in California agriculture, while sequestering carbon in the soil and reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. The pet food product may be based on fruits and vegetables alone, or with meat and fish. CSS sends refrigerated trucks to markets to pick up organic residuals feedstock, or the supermarkets collect and transport the recovered food directly to the CSS plant in McClellan.
