California Grey Bears, Inc. has two programs which generate revenues: bundled rolled newspaper and recycled materials collected on-site at the recycling drop-off center. The paper rolling operation has been in operation since 1980. The large sections of newspaper are flattened into 25 lb. stacks, rolled, then tied with twine (half sheets and glossies are separated). The rolls are then sold by the ton for use by nurseries and florists to insulate fresh flowers for delivery. The drop-off recycling center started as a small newspaper drop-off site to support the paper rolling operation. The center is now the largest in Santa Cruz County accepting over 2,500 tons per year of newspaper, cardboard, brown bags, aluminum cans, glass bottles and jars, PET and HDPE containers, magazines, phone books, computer paper, and office paper.
