BioCycle Conference and CalRecycle Food Waste Prevention and Rescue Workshop
Message

CalRecycle and BioCycle will be co-hosting a one-day workshop titled “Wasted Food Prevention And Rescue” on Monday, April 4, in San Diego in conjunction with the annual BioCycle WestCoast16 Conference:  http://www.biocyclewestcoast.com/2016/monday.html

The workshop will bring together food rescue organizations, state and local government officials, solid waste haulers, organic materials handlers and other stakeholders to discuss food rescue efforts and food waste prevention ideas to help reduce food waste in the landfill--nearly 6 million tons per year in California alone.  See the agenda here: http://www.biocyclewestcoast.com/2016/monday.html

The morning session will include a keynote presentation by Dr. Eric Handler of the Waste Not OC Coalition.  Other topics of discussion include:

  • Programs, tools, policies and innovations to dramatically reduce the amount of edible food that ends up in landfills.
  • Deliver nutritional meals made from perishable food to mitigate hunger and malnutrition.
  • Best Management Practices to quantify wasted food to help achieve reduction goals, shift behavior, implement prevention programs, facilitate rescue and donation — and integrate these initiatives with organics recycling.
  • A presentation from Jordan Figueiredo of the Ugly Fruit and Vegetable campaign.

An afternoon session, which is free, will be a stakeholder discussion with CalRecycle staff about potential criteria and guidelines for a new grant program specifically aimed at food waste prevention and rescue to be administered by CalRecycle with Greenhouse Gas Reduction funding.  These funds are proposed in the Governor’s 2016/17 budget, but still need to be enacted by the Legislature.  If you plan to attend the CalRecycle stakeholder discussion in the afternoon only, please send an e-mail with your name(s) and affiliation to this e-mail address:  GHGReductions@calrecycle.ca.gov.

Discounts for the full-day workshop are available for qualified non-profits and local government agencies; please contact BioCycle for more information.  The Wasted Food Prevention And Rescue Workshop will kick off BioCycle’s 30th Anniversary West Coast Conference, April 4-7, 2016 at the Town & Country Hotel in San Diego, CA.
