Update on Mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling Education, Outreach & Reporting Resources
Message

Good afternoon.  It has been a while since we have sent out an update regarding Mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling (AB 1826) information and resources.  The following is a quick summary of related education/outreach efforts and materials for your information and reference.

Reporting (For Jurisdictions)

  • Draft Electronic Annual Report Questions to Address AB 1826 (PDF, 501 KB). This file details the specific questions that will need to be addressed in the Electronic Annual Report for each jurisdiction, starting with the 2016 report (due in August 2017).
  • AB 876 Guidance and Calculator--CalRecycle created guidance and a calculator to assist jurisdictions with compostable organics diversion planning. AB 876 requires a county or regional agency to provide an estimate of organics generated and diversion capacity needed over a 15-year period. Jurisdictions and counties will report to CalRecycle on their progress in implementing an organic waste recycling program, estimates of organic waste disposed, needed capacity to divert organics, and planning to develop this infrastructure through the Electronic Annual Report (EAR) beginning with the 2016 report (due in August 2017). The calculator is being tested and will be published soon.

Mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling Brochure

This brochure has been updated and now is available in Spanish.   It is available in PDF format and can be modified to meet your jurisdiction’s unique circumstances using Adobe Acrobat Pro. If you would like an InDesign version of this publication, please send an e-mail request to lamd@CalRecycle.ca.gov.

Industry Outreach

CalRecycle continues to coordinate with various industry associations with respect to providing AB 1828 education and outreach.  Below is a summary of some of the organizations and the messaging they are providing to their members.

With respect to schools, CalRecycle is working with the Association of California School Administrators, California School Boards Association, California Association of School Business Officials, Small School District Association and the Mother Lode Chapter of California School Nutrition Association to coordinate education and outreach to their membership.  In addition to these organizations, CalRecycle is working with a number of specific restaurants and retail chains with respect to statewide implementation.   CalRecycle has also prepared specific pages for state agencies and AB 1826 at http://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/StateAgency/Assistance/Organics/default.htm, which includes a letter sent to state agencies and education and outreach materials.
