CalRecycle has published a report detailing a Commercial Generator-based Edible Food Waste Characterization Study conducted in 2021. This study focused on edible food discarded from a variety of commercial sources selected for higher outputs of food waste with an emphasis on potentially donatable food. Samples were collected from both the disposal and organic diversion streams as available. The study occurred in the three most populous regions of the state, Southern California, Bay Area, and Central Valley.
