This case study supports responsibilities of the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) under the California Air Resources Board Scoping Plan to address greenhouse gas emissions through an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) approach. This case study is concerned with the production and end-of-life management of single-use folding plastic containers, known as “clamshells,” commonly used to contain food for takeout from restaurants. Specifically, this case study assesses the energy and greenhouse gas implications of using different materials and end-of-life management methods for plastic clamshell containers.
