This report was prepared in 2012 by California State University, Chico under contract from the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle). The contractor employed American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standardized testing methods to evaluate biodegradation of six commercially available bioplastic products (and disintegration evaluations of two bottles) in a simulated marine environment. The study also included infrared and calorimeter testing to identify the potential release of chemical intermediates and byproducts as a result of degradation.
